DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
The visual world of Trespass will be dark, claustrophobic, and unnerving. The mansion is not just a setting but a character in its own right, its corridors swallowing the explorers as they push deeper inside. Light will be sourced almost entirely from torches, headlamps, and occasional flickers from GoPros or mobile phones.
This creates an immediacy that feels real and unrelenting, while giving the house control over what is seen and what is not. Camera work will convey constant motion, tracking the team’s restless energy as they move through narrow halls, shifting rooms, and unstable stairwells. This will be balanced with sudden stillness during moments of terror. Occasional cutaways to body-mounted cameras and night vision will intersperse the main cinematography, not as a gimmick but to heighten the sense of being trapped in an environment where technology offers no safety.
Lighting will remain practical and limited. Beams of torchlight cutting through the dark will dictate framing and rhythm, allowing the unseen to hold as much power as what is revealed. Each character’s death will be staged dynamically, the camera showing their physical collapse while hinting at the private terror only they can see, leaving the audience to piece together the horror with imagination.
Sound and score will be equally restrained and unsettling. The creak of floorboards, the echo of empty rooms… these will dominate over heavy music, with silence often proving most effective. When score is used, it will be sparse and atmospheric, underscoring the sense of dread rather than leading it.
With the actors, I want the focus to be on naturalism. These are not caricatures but people chasing fame, validation, and belonging. Performances will ground the film’s supernatural elements, with rehearsals exploring both their on-camera personas and the fractures beneath.
The artistic approach to Trespass is built on tension, movement, and restraint. By letting the house dictate pace, space, and light, the audience is drawn into an atmosphere where the line between exploration and punishment becomes fatally blurred.
